48 Hours in Belfast - Part Two -

First of all I would like to recommend our hotel in Belfast, Ten Square Hotel. When we arrive in the morning they were very kind, and told us that if our room was ready early they would call us. When we came back to do the check in, they offered us a glass of champagne and sat in the cozy reception area while the receptionist arranged everything.

Antes de nada me gustaría recomendar el hotel donde me hospedé en Belfast, Ten Square Hotel. Cuando llegué por la mañana fueron muy amables y nos dijeron que si la habitación estaba disponible pronto nos llamarían al móvil. Cuando volvimos para hacer el check in y descansar un poco no ofrecieron un vaso de champán y mientras esperábamos sentados en el acogedor espacio en recepción, la recepcionista arreglaba todos los detalles para el check in.

The room was great, very spacious, clean and modern. The best thing though were the views. The hotel is just by Belfast´s City Hall, a beautiful building. It was a really good experience and totally recommend this hotel if you ever go to Belfast.

La habitación está genial, muy espaciosa, limpia y moderna. Lo mejor de todo eran las vistas. El hotel está justo al lado del City Hall, que es un edificio precioso. Recomiendo este hotel a todos los que estéis pensando en ir a Belfast, porque por lo menos mi experiencia fue buenísima.

As I said yesterday (here), I don´t think 48 hours are enough in Belfast. There is so much to see and do, so many places to explore. It is also a great city for shopping and going out. So if you go, try to stay there a bit longer!

Como ya dije ayer (aquí), no creo que 48 horas en Belfast sean suficientes. Hay mucho que ver y hacer, muchos sitios para explorar. Es también una ciudad estupenda para ir de compras o salir por la noche. Así que si vais, intentad estar un día o dos más!

One of the places we visited, and where the Sightseeing Bus stops, is Crumlin Road Jail and Court House.  Well we visited the Jail as the Court House was sold for a pound and now it is private own, so no access there.

Uno de los sitios que fuimos a ver y donde el Sightseeing Bus te deja es Crumlin Road Jail y la Court House, una cárcel y el juzgado. Bueno, se puede visitar la cárcel porque el edificio del juzgado lo vendieron por una libra y ahora es propiedad privada.

The Court House looks so creepy because it suffered a series of fires, and it is basically abandoned now. In my opinion it is a shame, as it is a beautiful historic building and I think the council or some local authority should be taking care of it. But that is only my opinion.

Los antiguos juzgados dan un poco de miedo, hace unos años hubo unos cuantos incendios que destruyeron el edificio, y hoy en día está básicamente abandonado. En mi opinión creo que es una pena que un edificio tan bonito e histórico acabe así, y creo que el ayuntamiento y alguna autoridad local deberían haberlo cuidado y reconvertido. Pero esa es solo mi opinión.

Opposite the Court House there is Crumlin Road Jail or Gaol as they say in Norther Ireland. The prison opened in 1845 and in 1996 it closed its doors as a jail, to open after extensive renovations as a visitor attraction.

En frente de la Court House está Crumlin Road Jail, o Gaol como dicen en Irlanda del Norte. La prisión abrió en 1845 y en 1996 dejó de operar como cárcel. Después de ser renovada completamente, hoy en día es una atracción para todos los que visitan Belfast.

The price of the entrance is £8.50 for an adult and there is a small discount if you show the Sightseeing Bus ticket. The tours last for about an hour and are very interesting. Our guide was great, she knew a lot about the prison and was really good at telling stories and making people interested.

El precio de la entrada son 8,50 libras para un adulto y tiene un pequeño descuento si enseñas el ticket del autobús turístico. Los tours duran sobre una hora y son muy interesantes. Nuestra guía era estupenda, sabía muchísimo sobre el sitio y se le daba muy bien contar historias y mantener interesada a la gente.

This is the tunnel between the Jail and the Court House. Now you can only see half the tunnel as the other half is private property, as the Court House.
Este es el túnel que une la prisión con los juzgados. Hoy en día solo se puede ir hasta la mitad del túnel ya que la otra mitad es propiedad privada, pertenece a la Court House.

This are the names of those executed in the prison.
Estos son los nombres de las personas ejecutadas en esta cárcel.

Those executed didn´t have the right to be buried in a cemetery, they had to be buried in prison grounds and with unmarked graves. It seems somebody thought that was too much and marked where the graves are. In some you can also see the initials of the person.
Aquellos que fueron ejecutados no tenían derecho a ser enterrados en un cementerio, tenían que ser enterrados en el área de la prisión y con tumbas no identificadas. Parece ser que alguien pensó que todo esto era pasarse y marcó donde están algunas de las tumbas. En algunas se pueden ver las iniciales de las personas enterradas allí.

Crumlin Road Gaol is full of interesting stories, from how they had to segregate Nationalists and Unionists to how it once had women and children between its walls. Some stories are funny, others not so much, but it is interesting and it shows you a part of the city´s history.

Crumlin Road Gaol está llena de historias interesantes, desde como tuvieron que separar a los Nacionalistas de los Unionistas, hasta como hace mucho tiempo mujeres y niños eran prisioneros entre esas paredes. Algunas historias son graciosas, otras no tanto, pero es interesante y enseña una parte de la historia de la ciudad.

Another stop is Queen´s University, one of the most important universities in the United Kingdom. It was founded in 1845 as Queen´s College and became a university in 1908. The main building is truly beautiful, and the whole area where it is placed is quite trendy and cool, full of little cafes and good restaurants.

Otra parada es Queen´s University, una de las universidades más importantes del Reino Unido. Fue fundada en 1845 como Queen´s College, y se convirtió en universidad en 1908. El edificio principal es precioso, y toda el área donde se encuentra es moderna y desenfadada, llena de pequeñas cafeterías y buenos restaurantes.

I once read a book about the Balkans named Hotel Europa. At some point in the book the author mentions that in every troubled city there is a Hotel Europa (or a Cafe Europa), Sarajevo and Belfast are two good examples of this.

Hace tiempo leí un libro sobre los Balcanes que se llamaba Hotel Europa. En algún punto del libro el autor comenta que todas las ciudades con problemas tienen un Hotel Europa (o Café Europa), Sarajevo y Belfast son dos buenos ejemplos de esto.

Belfast´s Hotel Europa has the "honour" to be the most bombarded hotel in Europe, and only second in the world after the (I think) Hilton in Baghdad. Remember that Belfast and all Northern Ireland had very important attacks, where many people lost their lives.

El Hotel Europa de Belfast tiene el "honor" de ser el hotel más bombardeado de Europa, y el segundo del mundo, sólo detrás del Hilton (creo) en Baghdad. Recuerda que Belfast y todo Irlanda del Norte sufrieron muchos ataques y mucha gente perdió la vida en ellos.

The hotel is not the prettiest but it is a true witness of Belfast´s recent past.

El hotel no es el más bonito pero es un claro testigo del pasado reciente de Belfast.

On the last day we also visited the City Hall. It was open and with lots of activities for kids due to the Easter break. They had a big tv screen outside where they were showing a film for children.

El último día también visitamos el City Hall. Estaba abierto y tenía muchas actividades para niños ya que era Semana Santa. Afuera había una tele gigante donde ponían películas para los peques.

The City Hall is a beautiful building, very impressive. Inside is just as you would expect, like a palace. The chandeliers and the marble are stunning, and its decadent style will impress any visitors. There are free guided tours at certain hours, where you can learn more about this amazing building.

El City Hall es un edificio precioso, impresionante. Dentro es justo como te lo esperas, como un palacio. Las lámparas y el mármol son increíbles, y su estilo elegante impresiona a todos los visitantes. Tienen tours guiados a ciertas horas, donde poder descubrir más sobre este precioso edificio.

As I said, there is much much more to see and do. I hopefully will be going back again, as I would like to explore the city more and spend more time in certain places. Maybe even visit the Titanic Exhibition Centre.

Como ya dije, hay mucho más para ver y para hacer. Ojalá que pueda volver pronto ya que me encantaría explorar la ciudad con más calma. Tal vez ir a la exposición permanente del Titanic.

This were my 48 hours in Belfast. I loved every minute of it, thought people were very friendly, with a cracking sense of humour, and the city just beautiful.

Estas fueron mis 48 horas en Belfast. Me encantó cada minuto que pasé allí, la gente es majísima, con un sentido del humor genial, y la ciudad es preciosa.

48 Hours in Belfast - Part One -

For the Easter break we decided to spend just 48 hours in Belfast, taking the ferry early in the morning and then back late in the evening. It was my first time in Belfast and I wasn´t sure what to expect. I imagine it to be a very industrial city, full of tall grey buildings.

Por Semana Santa fuimos a pasar 48 horas en Belfast, yendo en ferry por la mañana temprano y volviendo por la noche. Era mi primera vez en Belfast y no sabía muy bien qué esperar. Pensé que sería una ciudad muy industrial, llena de edificios altos y grises.

But I must say Belfast surprised me and I wished those 48 hours could be transformed into 72 at least! Yes, Belfast is industrial, but when you are in the city centre you don´t notice it. It is a very well kept city, clean, with big open streets, and great for shopping.

Pero debo decir que Belfast me sorprendió muy gratamente y ¡ojalá que esas 48 horas se pudiesen transformar en 72 por lo menos!

Belfast doesn´t have the best of reputations due to the conflict in recent years, however it is better now, and you can´t feel any of it in the city centre. Of course there are areas where it is still alive, a sleeping monster that might or (hopefully) might not wake up again.

Belfast no tiene muy buena reputación después de años de conflicto, sin embargo hoy en día está muy bien y ni te das cuenta cuando estás en el centro. Por supuesto que hay áreas donde el conflicto todavía está muy vivo, un monstruo dormido que puede o no (ojalá) volver a despertar.

As we were there for only two days we decided to take the Sightseeing Bus Tour to see and discover as much as possible in this little time. I turned out to be a great decision even if we had to queue for half an hour. We bought the tickets online but the previous bus was completely full so there we were, waiting...

Como sólo fuimos para dos días decidimos coger el Sightseeing Bur Tour para poder ver y descubrir lo máximo posible en ese poco tiempo. Fue una gran decisión, aunque tuvimos que hacer cola durante media hora, y eso que compramos los billetes con antelación, pero cuando llegamos el autobús estaba lleno.

The guides were really friendly people who know a lot about the city, they share personal experiences and thoughts, and they make lots of jokes. We took the bus twice and had two different guides, both were brilliant.

Los guías son muy simpáticos y saben muchísimo sobre la ciudad. Además cuentan experiencias personales y hacen muchísimos chistes. Cogimos el autobús los dos días y nos tocaron dos guías distintos, los dos fueron geniales.

First it heads off to the Titanic Quarter. As the name indicates, here is where the Titanic was designed and built. As you may know, Belfast is one of the main shipbuilding cities, and the Titanic its most famous descendant.

La primera parada, como no podía ser de otra forma, es la zona del Titanic. Aquí fue donde se diseñó y construyó el Titanic. Como muchos sabréis, Belfast es una ciudad muy conocida por sus astilleros, y el Titanic es su descendiente más conocido.

The triangle fronts are the same heigh and shape as the one the Titanic had,. Impressive, huh?
Los triángulos son de la misma altura y anchura que los del Titanic. Increíble, eh?

More about the city´s relationship with the shipbuilding industry and one of Belfast landmarks: Harland and Wolf cranes.

Otra de las cosas que muestra la relación de la ciudad con los astilleros y que también es una de las imágenes más conocidas de Belfast son las grúas de Harland and Wolf.

The Parliament Buildings are a very beautiful place. Surrounded by incredible gardens this magnificent white building stands proud, as if nothing could get to it. It seems the building was precious that during the War they decided to camouflage it so it would be destroyed.

Los edificios del Parlamento son preciosos. Están rodeados de jardines increíbles y este majestuoso edificio blanco se alza orgulloso, como si nada pudiese con él. Parece ser que como el edificio es tan preciado que durante la Guerra decidieron camuflarlo para que no fuese destruido.

They put a grey type of cover all over the building, as they were reassured it would came out really easily and the building wouldn´t get damage. Well, none of this happened and they were able to remove the last grey thing from the building not that long ago. And it got damaged in some places. Good news is that it wasn´t destroyed during the War!

Le pusieron una especie de cobertura cubriendo todo el edificio, y aseguraron que sería muy fácil de quitar y que el edificio no se dañaría. Bueno, nada de eso fue verdad y sólo fueron capaces de quitar toda la parte gris hace poco tiempo. Y el edificio se dañó en algunos sitios. ¡Las buenas noticias son que consiguieron que nadie lo destruyese durante la guerra!

The Parliament Buildings now host the Northern Ireland Assembly, the legislative body of Northern Ireland established under the Good Friday Agreement. It is a beautiful and peaceful place where to spend a few hours, just walking along the paths and contemplating the gardens.

Los edificios del Parlamento albergan hoy en día la Asamblea de Irlanda del Norte, el cuerpo legislativo que se formó gracias al Acuerdo del Buen Viernes. Es un lugar precioso y lleno de paz donde se pueden pasar varias horas simplemente caminando y admirando los jardines.

Another curious story is that the path you see on the third photo has trees on both sides. They planted one tree for each day of the year. But this one has 366 trees, due to the fact that that year in particular was a leap year!

Otra historia curiosa es que el camino que veis en la tercera foto tiene árboles a ambos lados. Fueron plantados uno por cada día del año. Pero el total es de 366 árboles, ya que el año que los plantaron era bisiesto.

Back in the city the bus took us to the area where the famous Peace Lines, which are a wall even if they try to make the name sound ¨nice¨. This wall is to separate two areas of town, the Unionists from the Nationalists. It is a bit shocking to see that these things are needed nowadays. On the second day some of the gates on the wall were closed, I don´t know the reason for that but it really looked like a giant prison to me.

De vuelta a la ciudad el autobús va a la zona de las famosas Lineas de la Paz, que básicamente son un muro. Suena mejor decir lo de la paz, pero cuando las ves, ves que son un muro, tal cual. El muro separa dos zonas de Belfast, a los Unionistas de los Nacionalistas. Es bastante chocante ver que estas cosas siguen siendo necesarias hoy en día. Durante el segundo día que estuvimos allí algunas de las puertas estaban cerradas, no sé la razón pero da idea de cárcel gigante.

Shankill Road belongs to the Unionist and Loyalist (and Protestant) area of town. In here you can find dozens of murals on the walls with Union Jacks, the Queen and some of their heroes. Here is where you can also find more Glasgow Rangers supporters clubs than in all Glasgow.

Shankill Road pertenece a los Unionistas (y Protestantes). Aquí podemos encontrar docenas de murales en las paredes con Union Jacks, la Reina Isabel II y algunos de sus héroes. Aquí uno se puede encontrar también con más clubs de fans de los Glasgow Rangers que en todo Glasgow.

And then Falls Road, Nationalist (and Catholic) where green is the main colour and Glasgow Celtic supporters are more than welcome. They also have their murals with their heroes and moments in history.

Y luego está Falls Road, Nacionalista (y Católica) donde el verde es el color predominante y los seguidores del Celtic son más que bienvenidos. También tienen murales con sus héroes y momentos históricos.

The person on the first mural is Bobby Sands, who died after 66 days of hunger striking, claiming for improvements in the prison where he has held. He was 27 years old.

El hombre del primer mural es Bobby Sands, quien murió después de pasar 66 días en huelga de hambre. Intentaba conseguir mejores condiciones de vida en la cárcel. Tenía 27 años.

The conflict in Belfast is extremely complicated and I am not trying to pretend I know a lot (or even a little about it). After my 48 hours in Belfast I would like to learn more about this matter, as I find it fascinating. Here I only show you the photos I took on the tour, and the bits of history I know about, but from a very respectful way. I am aware of how sensitive this matter is to many people.

El conflicto en Belfast es extremadamente complicado y yo no voy a pretender que sé mucho (ni poco) sobre esto. Después de 48 horas en Belfast me gustaría ampliar mis conocimientos sobre el tema, ya que creo que es fascinante. Aquí sólo muestro algunas de las fotos que saqué esos días, y momentos de las historia que conozco. Todo desde el mayor de los respetos ya que sé que es un tema muy sensible para mucha gente.
