Haworth - Where the Brontë Sisters Grew Up

I am a literature freak, I confess. One of the things I love the most when travelling is to discover places where writers were born, or where some characters lived. When I went to New York I spend hours around a certain area because I heard Paul Auster lived near there...

Soy una friki de la literatura, lo confieso. Una de las cosas que más me gustan cuando viajo es descubrir sitios en los que escritores nacieron, o personajes de novelas vivieron. Cuando fui a Nueva York me pasé horas en un área en concreto porque escuché en algún sitio que Paul Auster vivía cerca...

So with that in mind you can imagine the reason why I insisted in stopping at Haworth, Yorkshire. It was on a trip to visit York, and then Manchester. Well, halfway you can find Haworth, a tiny town full of stories. little old houses, green fields and history, a lot of history.

Teniendo eso en cuenta ya os podéis imaginar por qué insistí en parar en Haworth, en el condado de York. Fue durante un viaje para conocer York y luego Manchester. A mitad de camino podéis encontrar Haworth, un pequeño pueblo lleno de historias, casitas antiguas, campos verdes e historia, mucha historia.

 

Haworth is the place where the Brontë sisters grew up and spent part of their lives, where their father, Patrick, worked as a Reverend in the small church by their house. The story says the sisters got inspired by their surroundings, where their imagination could flow and they were free to write and dream. They say the mountains near Haworth inspired Wuthering Heights, by Emily Brontë. Charlotte Brontë wrote Jane Eyre when living in Haworth.

Haworth es el pueblo donde las hermanas Brontë crecieron y vivieron parte de sus vidas. Su padre, Patrick, fue Reverendo en la pequeña iglesia frente a la casa. La historia cuenta que las hermanas se inspiraron con los alrededores, donde su imaginación podía fluir y eran libres para escribir y soñar. Dicen que las montañas cerca de Haworth inspiraron Cumbres Borrascosas, de Emily Brontë. Charlotte Brontë escribió Jane Eyre cuando vivía en Haworth.

In the town you can find the house (Patronage) where they used to live, now it houses a museum about the sisters and their life in the town. Unfortunately I was there when it was closed and I could visit it. I guess it was good news, now I have to go back!

En el pueblo podéis encontrar la casa donde vivieron, ahora alberga un museo sobre las hermanas y su vida en el pueblo. Yo cuando fui tuve mala suerte y no pude entrar al museo porque estaba cerrado. Supongo que eso va a hacer que vuelva a este bonito pueblo!

What I could visit was the church where the father worked and the cemetery surrounding it. I could also see the house from the outside! I know, not ideal...

Lo que sí que pude visitar fue la iglesia donde trabajaba Patrick Brontë y el cementerio que la bordea. También pude ver la casa desde fuera. Algo es algo...

You know when you have that feeling that somebody is looking at you, staring at you... And it starts to get a bit creepy and you start feeling a bit uncomfortable? Well that is exactly what happened to me inside that little church. Obviously with my imagination I thought that one of the sisters was descending upon me to present me with the gift of writing novels that centuries later people would still read...

¿Sabéis cuando creéis que alguien os está mirando fijamente, y a medida que pasa el tiempo empieza a dar un poco de miedo y te sientes algo incómodo? Bueno eso es lo que me pasó dentro de la iglesia. Obviamente con mi imaginación desmedida pensé que se trataba de una de las hermanas, descendiendo sobre mi para ofrecerme las claves para escribir novelas que dentro de varios siglos la gente seguirá leyendo...

Umm, not quite. It was this beautiful cat that we found inside the church and accompanied and show us around during the time we where there. Maybe the cat was a reincarnation of Charlotte... I guess I will never find out now!

Casi, pero no! Era este precioso gato que encontré dentro de la iglesia y que me acompañó y enseñó el sitio durante el tiempo que pasé allí dentro. Quién sabe, tal vez el gato era la reencarnación de Charlotte!

The church and town are full of signs where they tell you what the Brontë family were up to when they lived there. You also have signs telling you where they used to sit, buy, where their friends lived and so on.

La iglesia y el pueblo están llenos de grabados donde te explican lo que hacía la familia. También podéis encontrar señales indicando donde solían sentarse, donde vivían sus amigos y mucho más.

The town is a great place to spend a day or two. As I said it is full of stories, the people I encountered were very nice, the views are beautiful, and it is really peaceful there. It is also not that far from York or Manchester, so if you are visiting any of these places you can always escape for a day and spend some hours at Haworth.

El pueblo es un sitio estupendo para pasar un día o dos. Como dije, está lleno de historias, la gente es simpática, las vistas increíbles y el sitio transmite paz y tranquilidad. No está lejos ni de York ni de Manchester, así que si visitáis uno de esas ciudades siempre podéis hacer una escapada y pasar un rato en Haworth.
